This post is the result of my experience and the additional by searching on Google with different keywords of Microsoft office with open office.
For an explanation of the differences between Microsoft Office and Open Office, here I took from Beritanet.com
In the OpenOffice.org, source code is available there for free. Free source code that anyone can be utilized during the follow legal rules that exist in OpenOffice.org, if maybe a time OpenOffice.org developers have not wanted to develop it again. The development will also not have to bother as Microsoft Office that has to pay a license for validity so that the user does not need to depend on the company’s developers.
OpenOffice.org is compatible for storage of other documents such as documents from Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, Lotus and AutoCAD so that users can work in a variety of document formats. OpenOffice documents can also be exported to other document formats like PDF or Flash without requiring any additional programs. While Microsoft Office does have the “Save As PDF”, but it seems a little slower emergence than OpenOffice.org.
In addition, OpenOffice also works on many operating system platforms such as Linux, Windows, Macintosh, UNIX, BSD, Solaris and others so that users do not need to be confused if one day has to replace the operating system. In contrast to Microsoft Office that only works on Windows and Macintosh platforms, so that when I have to switch operating systems other than Windows and Macintosh, the user cannot run Microsoft Office anymore. For the macro problem with OpenOffice.org it can build macros with various programming languages such as JavaScript and Python, in addition to OpenOffice.org Basic.
OpenOffice.org also supports large databases such as ODBC, JDBC and is similar to Microsoft Access. Of course, support for OpenOffice.org features will continue to grow until maybe a time will equal the position of Microsoft Office.
Here the differences of Microsoft office and Open office in addition to the above explanation and the conclusion:
Perhaps the difference above is the general nature, about something more specific such as program with menu features, it is good that we can use both to compare. I also have used OpenOffice, but from the description above may I still use the more familiar Ms. Office with consideration for me.
